WINTER/SPRING 2013 BROCHURE

KNIGHTS OF PARK FOREST CHESS CLUB
Come join the Knights of Park Forest Chess Club. We want to open up the membership of this
group to as many of the experiences of chess as possible. From the casual games that you can find
at a coffeehouse to more formalized games with stricter rules that you’d see at competitive tournaments
as well as instruction for players just starting out or wanting to improve. We have a variety of skill levels
in the group from beginner to expert-strength and all chess players are welcome.

Ages 7-17              $15   one year membership
Ages 18 & older     $25   one year membership
Village Hall, Employee Lounge
Mondays 5-8 pm & Saturdays 1-3 pm

JUNIOR HIGH CANTEEN
Area youth are invited to participate in this popular drop-in program. Activities include ping pong,
air hockey, pool and open gym. This program is open to all students living in Park Forest. Students
may purchase a pass or pay a nightly fee.

BLUES KIDS HARMONICA CLASS
Learn basic harmonica techniques such as playing within the 12 bar blues progression and more.
No musical experience is  required. Bring a C diatonic harmonica and a desire to learn to play the blues!
Clement Bashir instructs the class. Come to a free introductory class on Wednesday, January 23rd, 6-7 pm,
for Blues Kids, the harmonica class for youth, ages 7-14, where our instructor will give a demonstration
of Harmonica and allow the youth to try it out for themselves.

SUMMER 2013 BROCHURE 

SUMMER CELEBRATION
Did you know June 20th is the first day of summer? Come out to the Central Park Wetlands and
celebrate all the sun has to offer. Make a solar cooker to take home, learn how electricity is made from
sunlight and visit the roof of the Aqua Center to check out how they heat the building's water by the sun.
If we are lucky we might even see sun spots! Children under 7 years old must take the class with an adult.

CRITTERS OF THE NIGHT
Whether you enjoy being outside in the dark or are a little nervous about things that go bump in the
night, you will enjoy this evening program. We will discuss ANYTHING that happens at night:
astronomy, nocturnal animals, light pollution and more. Games, crafts and even a hike are all possible,
so don't miss out.

NATURE BINGO
Come to the Wetlands Discovery Center and play Nature Bingo. Create your own bingo card that you
get to keep! For 45 minutes we will play a themed bingo game and the last 15 minutes (weather dependent)
we will go on an interpretive hike. No more B-6! Try ephyna or polliwog! After each item called, you will
learn a few interesting facts too. Wonderful prizes for winners, so make sure you register by the Monday
before each program. Children under 7 years old must take the class with an adult.

YOUNG PICASSOS
This program will encourage youth to use their imagination and foster their creative capabilities. Various
projects will be involved such as drawing with pastels and pencils, painting with watercolors, creating
unique crafts, and sculptures and more.  All supplies included except an all-purpose art pad purchased
by participants.  Pat Moore instructs the class.

MIXED MEDIA WORKSHOP
Create a mixed media project with artist Pat Moore. This project involves using creative thinking
and various art supplies to create and decorate a box your child can take home. A light snack will
be served and all supplies are included.

WOMEN’S SELF DEFENSE WORKSHOP
Ladies, have you ever felt unsafe and not sure of what to do? Have you or someone you know ever been
in a violent encounter or assaulted? Urban Jiujitsuka and the Village of Park Forest present a interactive
workshop designed to inform women on how to react if one of these situations arise. The workshop will
consist of both a discussion session and interactive basic self defense training. Don’t become a victim,
Your Life Matters!

WOMEN’S SELF DEFENSE
Join our Women’s Self Defense Program conducted by self defense expert Sempai Yasir. Learn how
defend yourself against grabs, chokes, muggings, gun and knife attacks! Also be prepared for a phenomenal
workout! Participants will receive a signed certificate of completion at the end of 4 week session. You don’t
have to be a victim, Your Life Matters!

 FIRE DEPARTMENT PROGRAMS

BABYSITTER/LATCHKEY CLASS
This course is designed to teach pre-teens and teenagers who provide either self care
or child care for others how to handle most emergency situations they may encounter.
This class is taught by the Park Forest Fire Dept.
Ages 10-14       $15            1 week

BASIC FIRST AID CLASS
This two hour course is designed to teach pre-teens and teenagers about basic first aid and
how to handle minor medical incidents/emergencies. This class is taught by the Park Forest Fire Dept.

CPR/CLASSES
The Park Forest Fire Department offers American Heart Association compliant CPR Classes on
the 4th Thursday of each month. Classes begin at 6 pm and are held in the Training Room at the
Fire station located at 156 Indianwood Boulevard. Classes are taught by Firefighter/Paramedic Pillman
and last approximately 3-4 hours. Cost is $40 for Health Care Provider and $30 for Pediatric and Basic.
Payment can be made in advance (checks payable to Park Forest Fire Department) or on the day of class.
Card will not be issued until payment is received.

CROWD MANAGER TRAINING
The Park Forest Fire Department now offers a free Crowd Manager Training course available online.
A crowd manager is required during all hours of operation of an assembly occupancy. If you are affiliated
with such an occupancy, or otherwise require the training, visit the Fire Department’s website at pffd.vopf.com
to complete the course on-line.


 


Please note new Recreation Center Construction Entrance Details as of 7/23/12.

1.       During construction, Recreation program participants will enter off of Wilson Street.

2.       The new address for the Recreation Center is 215 Wilson Street.

3.       Please enter the building through Door #3 (blue flag).

4.       Parking is available on the west side of Wilson Street and in the North parking lot.

Beginning the week of July 23, 2012 there will be changes to the entry/exit point of the Park Forest Recreation Center located at Forest Trail Middle School.  Please make a note of the following changes as we apologize for the sudden change.
